Kuwait launched the Kuwaiti-Emirati School Football Challenge on January 31, 2026 at Jaber Al-Mubarak Stadium in Fahaheel under the patronage of Education Minister Jalal Al-Tabtabaei, featuring student teams from both countries in six matches through February 3 as part of a bilateral cooperation protocol, the Ministry of Education said. The historic event aims to foster Gulf brotherhood, discover talent and align with Kuwait Vision 2035 by promoting school sports cooperation, according to officials at the opening press conference.
Dr. Hessa Jassim Arab, acting director of the Department of Technical Guidance for Physical Education at the ministry, told Arab Times on the sidelines of the press conference that the tournament is the real launching pad for Gulf school sports cooperation. She said it was an implementation of the directives of the leadership of the two brotherly countries, with the support of the Education Minister, and that Kuwait is hosting the first leg while the second leg will be held in the UAE. Arab pointed out that football was chosen as the starting match because it is the most popular sport among students. She emphasized that the tournament serves as a platform for discovering student talent, fostering a spirit of fair competition and exchanging experiences between students, teachers and educational staff in both countries. The acting director unveiled plans to organize other tournaments in padel sports, basketball and volleyball.
Dr. Thuraya Al-Salmi, head of the UAE delegation, director of the Technical and Vocational Education Department and acting director of the Student Life Quality Department at the UAE Ministry of Education, expressed deep appreciation for the warm welcome and excellent organization. Al-Salmi said the championship reflects the deep fraternal ties between the two brotherly nations and is not just a sporting competition but a comprehensive educational message affirming that sports have become a national priority and an essential tool for building a healthy and disciplined generation while discovering talent at an early age. She noted that the Kuwaiti-Emirati Challenge Championship is the first collaboration of its kind in the field of school sports at the Gulf level and forms a true foundation for launching broader Gulf school championships in the future encompassing various team and individual sports. Al-Salmi added that the initiative contributes to establishing sporting sustainability and enhancing educational integration among the GCC countries while promoting values of belonging, teamwork and positive competition.
Arab added that the tournament aligns with Kuwait Vision 2035, particularly the pillar of educational sustainability and the development of student talent in various fields. A national deliberations report prepared for UNESCO stresses the importance of aligning student activities with educational curricula under the vision to build 21st century skills including through expanded sports pathways in secondary education and new disciplines. The report advocates developing learning environments such as gyms and activating activities to form creative human capital that meets future labor market needs and achieves sustainable development goals. Kuwait has dedicated substantial resources annually to education as part of this framework, with the initiative positioned to qualify students as future regional and international champions.
A GCC Secretariat publication on youth and sports bodies details how joint actions among member states have emphasized training through associations and scout organizations to advance junior development across the region. The Kuwaiti-Emirati school football event extends these efforts by focusing on classroom-level participation and setting a precedent for similar collaborations in other sports. Officials indicated the first leg in Kuwait will be followed by the return series in the UAE to sustain the partnership.
