Qatar sits level with the United Arab Emirates on three points atop Group B following a 2-0 victory over Bahrain in the tournament opener, according to the Gulf Football Federation standings. The United Arab Emirates opened with a 4-0 win against Yemen, leaving Bahrain and Yemen at the bottom with no points after one match each. A Qatar victory on Sunday combined with a United Arab Emirates win over Bahrain later in the day would send both teams through to the semifinals regardless of the final group match between Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, the federation schedule shows.

Yemen must earn at least a point against Qatar to maintain any chance of advancing and avoid elimination with one group match remaining, tournament officials indicated in pre-match briefings. The Yemen national team has struggled in recent Arabian Gulf Cup campaigns but enters this edition having secured qualification for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, according to Asian Football Confederation records. Historical data from past tournaments places Qatar as dominant in head-to-head meetings, with eight wins, two draws and one loss across all competitive encounters.

Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui has maintained the core of the squad that competed in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the addition of three new faces including Hashim Ali and Naif Al-Hadrami, the Qatar Football Association reported ahead of the tournament. Key players such as Akram Afif, Almoez Ali and captain Hassan Al-Haydos, who scored a penalty in the opening win, are expected to lead the attack against a Yemen side still seeking its first points. The match will be played at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, the same venue where the United Arab Emirates defeated Yemen in the first round of Group B.

The 27th Arabian Gulf Cup marks the fifth time Saudi Arabia has hosted the regional competition, which runs through October 6 and features eight teams divided into two groups of four, according to the Gulf Football Federation. Group A includes host Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman and Kuwait, while Group B pits the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Yemen against one another. Semifinal qualification requires a top-two finish in each group, with the final scheduled for early October.

Qatar last lifted the Arabian Gulf Cup title in 2014 and will view a strong showing in Jeddah as an important step in its post-World Cup rebuilding phase, the national federation stated. Yemen, which plays its home matches at neutral venues due to ongoing regional conditions, recorded a first-ever win in the previous edition of the competition but has never reached the semifinals. The encounter on September 27 will kick off at 18:55 local time, followed by the Bahrain versus United Arab Emirates fixture at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium.
