The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy will launch its annual periodic maintenance program on the electrical power grid starting October 1, 2026, according to a statement from the ministry’s official spokesperson Engineer Fatima Jawhar Hayat. The program targets components across transmission and distribution networks, beginning at main transmission stations before moving to secondary substations, overhead lines and underground cables. Hayat said the works form part of the ministry’s yearly plan aimed at raising the overall efficiency of the power system while strengthening its readiness for peak demand periods.

These maintenance activities could lead to scheduled temporary power interruptions in specified areas, the ministry explained in the statement released September 30. Timetables for the works will appear on the ministry’s official social media accounts, where updates on the start and completion of each job will also be posted. Affected customers will receive prior notice through the government’s Sahel unified communications platform using data registered with the Public Authority for Civil Information.

The maintenance schedule follows several unplanned outages recorded in September 2026, when the ministry reported technical faults at major substations that disrupted supply in multiple governorates including Hawally and Mubarak Al-Kabeer. In one incident detailed by the ministry on September 6, a sudden flashover at a main transformer triggered protective systems that took an entire station offline, cutting power to roughly 414 megawatts of load across several districts before emergency teams restored service within hours. A subsequent fault on September 8 affected feeders in the Fahaheel area, prompting similar rapid response measures according to the ministry’s updates.

Regional tensions had already tested the power infrastructure earlier in 2026, with a MEES analysis published September 25 noting that Iranian strikes on electricity facilities and related disruptions required operators to adjust generation units and delay some maintenance until late in the season. The ministry’s spokesperson indicated at the time that demand management and fuel-switching steps helped the system avoid prolonged blackouts despite those pressures. This latest maintenance drive therefore seeks to address accumulated needs while minimizing future emergency interventions.

Engineers will conduct the works under a structured program that the ministry said ensures rapid completion without compromising safety standards. Residents can track progress directly through the ministry’s online maintenance portal and social channels rather than relying on unofficial reports. The initiative covers areas nationwide although the precise sequence of affected zones will be released incrementally as the program advances.

Kuwait’s electricity consumption has grown steadily with compiled energy statistics showing an increase to 84,511 gigawatt hours in 2024 from 82,237 gigawatt hours a year earlier. The ministry has previously used similar pre-summer campaigns to reduce fault rates according to its own annual performance summaries. Further details on this October schedule will continue to emerge from the ministry’s official platforms in the coming days.
