The Kuwait News Agency reported that HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah held talks with Swiss President Guy Parmelin at Lohn Estate in Bern focusing on ways to strengthen commercial relations and expand cooperation across multiple fields. Kuwaiti Ambassador to Switzerland Yousef Abdul Samad told the agency that the visit represents an important milestone reflecting the two countries’ commitment to dialogue as they mark 60 years of diplomatic ties established in 1966. The ambassador highlighted how relations have grown from early friendship and political exchanges into broader collaboration on peace and security, sustainable development, the economy, investment and culture.
According to the Kuwait News Agency, both nations support diplomacy and mediation to resolve disputes and advance stability with the Crown Prince’s trip building on Swiss President Parmelin’s visit to Kuwait on February 1 for discussions with the Amir on bilateral and regional issues. That trip was followed by Swiss-Kuwaiti Business Days on February 3 and 4 that drew Swiss firms and spotlighted economic opportunities. Switzerland opened its embassy in Kuwait in 1975 while Kuwait established its embassy in Bern in 2006 and a new Swiss embassy building was inaugurated in Kuwait in October 2025.
KUNA stated that the leaders signed a declaration of intent between Switzerland Global Enterprise and the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority to promote two-way investments while addressing potential in health, fintech, sustainable agriculture and food security. United Nations COMTRADE data show Kuwait exported $26.96 million in goods to Switzerland in 2025 with pearls, precious stones and clocks and watches forming the largest categories. The agency added that Kuwaiti sovereign investments in Switzerland exceed $15 billion reflecting deep financial links that date back decades.
The Kuwait News Agency noted that the discussions also covered international developments including the situations in Iraq and Gaza along with humanitarian cooperation and support for a two-state solution in the Middle East. Swiss Ambassador to Kuwait Tiziano Balmelli described the Crown Prince’s visit as a significant milestone in strengthening and expanding bilateral relations across strategic fields. His comments reinforced the view that the partnership continues to gain momentum through high-level exchanges and practical agreements on investment protection, double taxation avoidance, visa exemptions and political consultations.
KUNA reported that private sector trade ties between the countries trace back to the 1930s with the Swiss-Kuwaiti Business Platform launched in 2023 providing an additional channel for economic engagement. The agency recalled Switzerland’s support for Kuwait during the 1990 Iraqi invasion including humanitarian aid to students and the role of the International Committee of the Red Cross in addressing missing persons cases. These historical elements alongside current commercial initiatives illustrate the breadth of relations that the latest visit seeks to advance further.
