Farwaniya Governor Sheikh Athbi Al-Nasser has described the upcoming Kuwait Sports Day as a national initiative that promotes community sports, physical activity and healthy living among all segments of society. The Feb. 7 gathering at the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Bridge falls under the patronage of Minister Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, with commitments secured from every state institution to join the activities, according to Al-Nasser in an Arab Times report from Jan. 26. The governor urged Farwaniya residents to participate actively, framing the event as an important step toward improving overall public health and fostering greater social cohesion.

In his statement, Al-Nasser praised the government’s sustained support for such programs, which he believes are crucial for establishing sports as an integral part of daily life. He highlighted how the chosen location on the bridge facilitates large-scale involvement and creates a vibrant setting suitable for families and individuals of all ages. The initiative aligns with national goals to enhance wellness across Kuwait, building on the success of prior editions that have grown in scale.

Faisal Al-Maqseed, president of the Kuwait Sports for All Federation, noted the dedication of the country’s leadership to advancing sports and public health while facilitating collaboration among relevant bodies. Speaking in connection with the announcement, Al-Maqseed encouraged broad attendance and emphasized the event’s inclusive approach that extends to both citizens and expatriates. His comments came as part of the federation’s efforts to maximize turnout for what has become an annual highlight on the sporting calendar.

The inaugural Kuwait Sports Day in 2024 attracted more than 13,000 participants, according to reporting by Arab Times at the time. Numbers increased to around 21,000 for the 2025 edition held at the same venue, Kuwait News Agency statistics show. This upward trend reflects growing public interest in mass participation events that combine exercise with community celebration.

Activities for the 2026 edition will feature a 5-kilometer walkathon along with a 15-kilometer bicycle race and supplementary sports engagements, all provided at no cost to encourage maximum involvement. Those interested can register through the Sahel app or the VisitKuwait platform, with collection of event kits available from designated spots including Shaheed Park, federation guidelines state. The program commences at approximately 8 a.m. and aims to accommodate diverse fitness levels among attendees.

Kuwait has invested significantly in sports infrastructure and youth programs since gaining independence, an overview from the Kuwait Embassy in Washington details. While association football commands the largest following, followed by basketball and handball, initiatives such as Sports Day help promote a wider array of physical pursuits. These annual events serve to reinforce messages of fitness, teamwork and healthy living that resonate throughout the national population.
