Bloomberg reported July 19, 2026, that multiple Wall Street investment firms are advocating the retention of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team. The investors view his leadership as instrumental to generating sustained commercial value for US Soccer once the 2026 FIFA World Cup concludes. Scott Goodwin of Diameter Capital Partners described him as the best coach the US men’s national team has ever had while stressing that any decision ultimately belongs to Pochettino himself.

The Bloomberg assessment found that continued on-field success would help expand the domestic fan base, draw additional sponsors and increase the overall investment appeal of American soccer. US Soccer’s 2023 annual report placed federation revenue at a record $450 million, reflecting rising commercial interest even before the tournament. FIFA figures show the 2022 World Cup in Qatar generated more than $7 billion in total revenue, setting a benchmark the 2026 edition is expected to surpass as the first 48-team competition.

Pochettino took charge of the USMNT in September 2023 after the federation parted ways with previous coaching staff, according to the official US Soccer announcement at the time. His tenure has coincided with improved international results that have heightened visibility for the program in the lead-up to the co-hosted tournament with Canada and Mexico. A Deloitte sports business review from 2024 noted that national team stability often correlates with sponsorship growth across major soccer markets.

Diameter Capital Partners maintains interests in sports and entertainment assets, company disclosures show, giving weight to Goodwin’s perspective on coaching impact. The Bloomberg report indicated that several other unidentified Wall Street entities share the outlook that Pochettino’s presence would support post-tournament momentum. FIFA’s forward-looking estimates released in 2025 projected the 2026 World Cup could contribute up to $11 billion to the combined economies of the host nations.

US Soccer has repeatedly stated in federation briefings that the World Cup represents a pivotal platform for long-term development of the sport within the country. The investors believe sustained competitive performance will be required to convert tournament-driven interest into enduring sponsorship and media rights value. Bloomberg data on North American sports investments has tracked a 22 percent compound annual growth rate in soccer-related deals since 2020.

Pochettino’s current contract runs through the 2026 tournament, leaving his future subject to separate negotiations, the report added. Wall Street’s intervention highlights the growing intersection of financial stakeholders and national team strategy. The federation’s commercial department has secured partnerships with major brands including Nike, Visa and Budweiser in recent cycles, according to US Soccer sponsorship disclosures.
