Security sources said the complainant had been visiting Al-Sabah Hospital late at night on August 27, 2026, when he noticed the iPhone 14 was missing while in the observation room. The man immediately suspected one of the individuals accompanying him of taking the device and moved to file an official theft complaint with police. He expressed specific fears that the phone could be reactivated abroad, allowing unauthorized access to personal data stored on it. Investigators have since referred the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department, which is examining all available leads in the case.

The complainant highlighted concerns over potential data breaches that could arise if the device falls into the wrong hands overseas, a risk amplified by the volume of sensitive information carried on modern smartphones. Security sources noted that such incidents often involve opportunistic acts in busy public locations like hospitals where visitors may become distracted. Similar patterns have emerged in other recent reports, underscoring a broader pattern of mobile device thefts that authorities continue to monitor closely throughout the country.

This latest case comes as Kuwaiti security forces have intensified efforts to address property crimes in multiple areas. The Ministry of Interior reported that a recent campaign in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh led to the arrest of 45 individuals linked to various thefts, including those involving electrical cables, copper, iron, vehicle exhaust systems and accessories. Among those detained, 36 were wanted in connection with absence cases while nine others faced charges for multiple criminal violations, with all referred to competent authorities for legal proceedings.

In a separate incident reported by security sources on August 11, a father filed a complaint under power of attorney after his son’s iPhone 16 Pro Max was stolen in the Ali Sabah Al-Salem area. That case formed part of three distinct theft reports investigated that week, which also included the disappearance of KD 240 in cash and vehicle license plates from a Toyota Land Cruiser. Authorities have maintained active probes into these matters as part of routine efforts to recover stolen items and identify those responsible.

The Criminal Investigation Department routinely employs technological tools to track missing devices, many of which feature built-in location services that function independently of SIM card changes. A security source indicated that these capabilities have proven effective in prior cases, though success depends on timely reporting and cooperation from networks. The current investigation will assess whether such methods can be applied to locate the iPhone 14 taken from Al-Sabah Hospital.

Kuwait has recorded notable activity in addressing technology-related crimes, with the Ministry of Interior documenting various operations against hacking and data misuse networks in recent months. One such case in June involved the arrest of a Kuwaiti citizen and a Syrian expatriate accused of remotely accessing phones to steal banking credentials and facilitate unauthorized transactions. These examples illustrate the intersection between physical theft and potential digital exploitation that investigators must consider when handling reports like the one filed on August 27.
