The Khan Academy overview of Islamic art and architecture describes the Kaaba as a pre-Islamic sanctuary in Mecca. Islamic tradition holds that the Prophet Abraham and his son Ismail constructed the original structure as a simple unroofed rectangular building. The Quraysh tribe rebuilt it around 608 after damage from fire and flooding while raising its door above ground level for protection. During that project the 35-year-old Muhammad assisted in settling a clan dispute over placement of the Black Stone.

Early Islamic caliphs expanded the site to serve a growing community of believers according to the same historical summary. The second caliph Umar enlarged the surrounding area between 634 and 644 to accommodate more pilgrims during the Hajj. His successor Uthman added colonnades around the plaza and incorporated other monuments into the sanctuary. These changes helped establish the Masjid al-Haram as the central mosque complex still visited by millions today.

A civil war in 683 brought further destruction when the Kaaba caught fire during a siege of Mecca as recorded in classical chronicles cited by Hajj and Umrah Planner. Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr who then controlled the city rebuilt the shrine to dimensions associated with Abraham and repaired the fractured Black Stone using silver. Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf later demolished parts of that structure in 693 on orders from the Umayyad caliph and restored the earlier Quraysh-era size. The episodes underscored the building’s symbolic importance in early Muslim political conflicts.

Severe floods in 1626 damaged the Kaaba and mosque prompting a full reconstruction completed in 1631 under Ottoman Sultan Murad IV according to accounts preserved in Arabic histories referenced on Wikipedia. Egyptian engineers supervised the project which employed local granite stones and restored both the cube and its surrounding plaza. That iteration has remained the basis for the current form with only incremental updates in later periods. Ottoman rulers viewed patronage of the Hejaz holy sites as a key religious duty.

A major modern restoration occurred between May and October 1996 when Saudi authorities reinforced the foundations and addressed structural wear as documented in technical reports on the sanctuary. The work preserved the historical appearance while applying contemporary engineering methods. Officials have since conducted regular maintenance including an annual washing ceremony performed inside the building. These efforts ensure the site’s safety for the millions of pilgrims who circle it during Umrah and Hajj.

Artistic depictions of the Kaaba have preserved its image across eras often centering it in world maps and pilgrimage illustrations a De Gruyter Brill volume on the subject has catalogued with examples from the 16th through 19th centuries. Medieval diagrams assisted believers in determining the correct qibla direction for prayer while miniatures captured scenes of devotion and natural disasters affecting the mosque. The Middle East Eye presentation of such images demonstrates how artists adapted styles to convey the sanctuary’s enduring spiritual role. One 1710 topographical view provides detailed context on Mecca’s layout at the time.
