Representing Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the crown prince detailed how Kuwait, fellow Gulf Cooperation Council members and Jordan have faced repeated Iranian ballistic missile, cruise missile and drone strikes since February despite not being parties to regional conflicts. Those attacks have killed and injured innocent civilians, including Kuwaiti military members and a child as well as nationals from friendly countries, while causing extensive material damage to infrastructure. In his address during the 81st session of the General Assembly, the crown prince stated that Iran has also obstructed maritime navigation and sought to close the Strait of Hormuz to exert leverage over the war, violating international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
The Kuwaiti representative expressed appreciation for brotherly and friendly nations that supported Kuwait and sponsored Security Council resolution 2817 along with related measures from the Human Rights Council and International Maritime Organization. Those texts condemned the Iranian actions as a threat to international peace and security, affirmed states’ right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and stressed unrestricted freedom of navigation. According to the speech, such solidarity has reinforced Kuwait’s position that Gulf security and stability constitute an essential foundation for broader regional and international peace.
The crown prince reiterated Kuwait’s backing for all diplomatic initiatives seeking de-escalation and a peaceful end to the conflict, commending mediation efforts led by Qatar and Pakistan toward sustainable regional understandings. Those understandings must rest on good-neighborliness, respect for state sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs and an end to support for proxies and militias while addressing security concerns including the Iranian nuclear file, ballistic missiles and drones. He added that freedom of navigation through the Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb must be guaranteed under international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Turning to bilateral ties, the crown prince affirmed that the security of Saudi Arabia forms an integral part of Kuwait’s own security and that of the entire GCC bloc. He extended Kuwait’s solidarity with Syria, welcoming international steps to lift sanctions on the Arab republic and remove its designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. The address further emphasized that just peace represents the route to stability, with respect for state sovereignty, protection of peoples’ rights and adherence to international law serving as indispensable elements for the security of all nations.
Kuwait’s position reflects a consistent diplomatic stance developed over decades of mediating regional disputes, including past efforts to resolve crises in the Gulf that drew international attention through similar UN platforms. The speech comes months after the Amir himself addressed the Iranian attacks in national addresses that invoked the right to self-defense and called for global condemnation of violations against Kuwaiti sovereignty.
