The General Administration of Customs reported intercepting a British visitor at Terminal 4 of Kuwait International Airport on August 17, 2026. Inspectors discovered 228 A4-sized sheets suspected of being infused with the synthetic drug methamphetamine, commonly referred to as Shabu, during a routine luggage examination following the passenger’s arrival from the United Kingdom. Officials prepared an arrest report and handed over the suspect along with the contraband to the General Department for Narcotics Control to initiate legal proceedings.

According to the General Administration of Customs, its personnel maintain heightened alertness at all airports and border crossings to thwart smuggling activities. The authority indicated that such operations involve detailed searches when indicators suggest possible concealment within personal belongings. This particular case at Terminal 4 featured in the authority’s update on its anti-smuggling measures at passenger terminals.

A comparable smuggling method appeared in a July 2026 incident where authorities seized 210 A4 sheets soaked with narcotics from an air cargo parcel originating in London, the Kuwait News Agency reported. The Ministry of Interior coordinated with customs officials in that operation to ensure the parcel underwent thorough inspection prior to delivery. Such repeated attempts using paper documents have prompted specialized detection protocols at both passenger and cargo facilities.

The Ministry of Interior has documented substantial results from its narcotics enforcement activities with recent campaigns leading to the confiscation of 9.59 tons of various drugs and 45 million psychotropic pills according to official releases. These efforts have also involved the arrest of thousands of individuals connected to drug-related offenses across the country. Ministry figures underscore the scale of the challenge posed by synthetic narcotics entering through commercial and private channels.

In its statement the General Administration of Customs affirmed that officers would persist in their endeavors to block prohibited items from reaching the local market through reinforced inspection procedures at Kuwait’s ports. The body stressed the importance of these measures in preserving national security and the well-being of residents. Coordination between customs and the dedicated narcotics department facilitates prompt action on all detected violations.

The US State Department’s 2025 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report placed Kuwait among nations actively addressing synthetic drug trafficking with authorities pursuing over 8,000 drug-related cases in recent years. The report highlighted collaborative work with global partners to disrupt supply chains feeding into the Gulf region. Airport terminals remain a focal area for these preventive actions given the volume of international arrivals.
