According to the US Department of State’s Office of the Historian diplomatic relations were established on September 22 1961 after Kuwait gained full independence from British protectorate status in June of that year. The American Embassy opened in Kuwait the same day with a chargé d’affaires designated to lead it. This formal beginning built on earlier consular ties and set the stage for a relationship that grew substantially in subsequent decades particularly after the 1991 liberation. The ministry has described the partnership as strategic and multifaceted spanning security economic and educational domains.
His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah received Rubio and the accompanying delegation on the occasion of the visit hailing the deep-rooted historical relations and longstanding friendship between the two peoples. The meetings underscored support for ongoing efforts to maintain regional security and stability amid broader Middle East developments. Kuwait hosts one of the largest concentrations of US military personnel outside the United States with the Kuwaiti government contributing to the costs of that presence according to assessments from the Congressional Research Service.
