The Kuwait Army General Staff announced that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team of the Land Forces Engineering Corps will carry out operations to handle shrapnel and explosive remnants in the northern region from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on June 23, 2026. In its statement, the General Staff noted that any explosions heard during this period are part of the scheduled EOD activities. The announcement was made on Tuesday to inform the public in advance.

According to the statement issued by the General Staff, the controlled detonations are necessary to eliminate potential hazards in the area. Residents in north Kuwait should expect to hear blasts but have been advised that they are not cause for concern. This type of operation is conducted to ensure the safety of civilians and the environment.

Kuwait has experienced a surge in such remnants following the interception of Iranian drones and missiles in early June 2026. The health ministry reported that an Iranian attack on a residential area in northern Kuwait injured six people. Kuwait’s civil defence and military authorities have since been managing the cleanup of fallen projectiles and debris.

A 1996 report cited in academic literature on military operations found that around one third of submunitions used in the Gulf War failed to explode in Kuwait. This has left a legacy of unexploded ordnance that clearance teams continue to address more than three decades later. The United Nations Compensation Commission has funded projects to dispose of ordnance at designated sites and restore the affected land.

The Kuwait News Agency reported a similar operation on June 2, 2026, when the army conducted detonations from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the northern region. That statement also reassured the public that sounds of explosions were part of the disposal process. These recurring activities demonstrate the extent of work still required to fully clear the region of war remnants.
