The theft took place at the Burgan oil field, one of Kuwait’s most important energy assets. According to initial reports, the cables were removed from a location within the field without immediate detection. Kuwait Oil Company staff discovered the missing items during a scheduled check and promptly alerted the authorities. The company is working closely with investigators to assess the impact on operations and to review security measures at the site.

According to the Ministry of Interior, similar incidents have been targeted in the past with successful prosecutions. In a July 2026 operation, the ministry arrested a gang that had stolen 400 tons of marine cables from KOC facilities valued at KD 420,000. The statement from the ministry detailed how the group used an insider, forged documents and a fake engineer to sell the materials at a scrapyard. The stolen items were recovered and the suspects referred to the public prosecution.

Kuwait Oil Company figures show that the Burgan field is the largest in the country and has been in production since 1938. The field contributes significantly to Kuwait’s oil exports with daily output often exceeding one million barrels. Maintaining the integrity of its infrastructure is a priority for the operator to ensure uninterrupted production.

A study on oil field thefts in Iraq’s Halfaya field documented more than 800 incidents of copper conductor theft from high voltage lines between 2010 and 2024, according to research published by PetroChina and academics. The pattern indicates that such crimes can lead to safety hazards and substantial financial losses for operators. Kuwait has seen increased efforts to curb these activities through enhanced monitoring and rapid response teams.

The Ministry of Interior has previously stated that protecting oil infrastructure remains a top security concern. In the recent July case, cash, vehicles and jewelry purchased with crime proceeds were seized from the suspects. Investigations into the latest Burgan theft are ongoing with no arrests reported so far.

Local security teams are reviewing available camera footage from the perimeter of the Burgan field. Employees at the site have been asked to provide any information that could assist the probe. The company has reinforced its call for vigilance among staff to prevent recurrence of such events.
