Argentine Ambassador Ramiro Velloso praised Kuwaiti support for Argentina’s national team at a World Cup viewing event on Tuesday. Addressing over 250 attendees at VOX Cinemas in The Avenues Mall, he described football as a universal language uniting people and noted the passion bolsters friendly ties between the nations.
The embassy had anticipated the large participation when planning the event some time ago. Velloso expressed his appreciation for the love and support that Kuwaitis give to Argentina and its national team. He said such feelings contribute to strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries and extend to other groups living in Kuwait. The ambassador clarified that the event aimed to enjoy the sporting atmosphere while celebrating the World Cup and supporting the squad.
According to Times Kuwait, the screening was a collaboration with Lulu Exchange during which Argentina secured a 2-0 win against Austria. Velloso observed that enthusiasm for his country’s team reaches beyond Kuwaitis to include expatriate communities like those from Kerala in India. He stressed that Kuwaiti society possesses a great passion for football similar to that of Argentines, turning the viewing into an opportunity to celebrate close people-to-people bonds.
Velloso presented his credentials in August 2025, the Kuwait News Agency reported. In an earlier interview with Times Kuwait, he characterized Argentina-Kuwait relations as friendly and respectful, built on decades of cooperation. The sports event builds on that foundation by leveraging shared interests in football.
The diplomat noted that the large presence of ambassadors and public figures at the gathering confirms sports’ ability to bring societies together. “Football is considered a universal language that unites people and transcends the boundaries of athletic competition,” Velloso said. This approach has defined his tenure since arriving in Kuwait last year.
