The Second Chamber of the Court of Appeal upheld seven-year jail terms for four Nigerian nationals and a six-month sentence for another in the case involving the robbery of a currency exchange office in Mahboula. The appellate panel confirmed the verdicts after reviewing appeals from the defendants who were convicted by a lower court. The decision was issued following hearings that examined the individual roles each man played in the January heist. Court records showed that the gang acted in concert to target the business for its cash holdings.

The second defendant brandished a fake gun to subdue employees while the first, third and fourth carried out the actual theft of the money. The fifth member of the group was convicted for his part in planning the robbery, helping to hide the stolen funds and facilitating the use of the proceeds. Judges determined that all five shared responsibility for the crime though their levels of involvement differed. The Public Prosecution had built a strong case using witness statements and physical evidence collected at the scene.

The robbery occurred in January when the men entered the exchange office in the coastal Mahboula district and made off with foreign currency notes. Police estimates placed the value of the haul at 4,600 Kuwaiti dinars or roughly $14,900 at current exchange rates. The targeted office had been handling transactions for local residents and expatriate workers in the area at the time of the attack. This type of crime has prompted several exchange businesses to review their security measures in recent months.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior reported that the General Department of Criminal Investigation in Ahmadi Governorate tracked and detained the suspects less than a day after the robbery. Officers relied on video recordings from nearby locations and tip-offs from the public to locate the gang. The swift action led to the recovery of most of the stolen currency along with the imitation firearm. Nigerian news organizations covered the arrests in late January citing official statements from Kuwaiti authorities.

The case progressed through the criminal justice system with the initial trial concluding earlier this year before the appeal process began. Prosecutors emphasized the premeditated nature of the offense and the potential danger posed by the use of a weapon even if it was not real. The Court of Appeal agreed with that assessment and maintained the original penalties without modification. All defendants are Nigerian nationals who had been residing in Kuwait prior to their arrest.

Following the ruling the five men will begin serving their respective prison terms in state facilities. Authorities have indicated that immigration procedures may follow completion of the sentences for the foreign convicts. The decision was announced through official judicial channels on July 20.
