The Ministry of Interior has rolled out an educational campaign detailing the correct interpretation of the new flashing traffic signals installed at intersections throughout Kuwait. A flashing red light serves as a warning to prepare for proceeding but requires drivers to remain stationary until the signal turns solid green, officials explained. The campaign explicitly states that flashing red means wait, not accelerate, to prevent dangerous premature movements that could lead to accidents. Drivers encountering a flashing green must prepare to halt gradually without abrupt braking that might cause rear-end collisions.
According to the General Traffic Department, the electronic system delivers five consecutive flashes to alert road users ahead of a color change, giving them time to react safely. This feature has been extended to the majority of intersections following successful trials that demonstrated reduced incidents. The department monitors equipped sites continuously to enforce regulations and record violations through cameras.
Implementation of the pre-alert mechanism aligns with amendments to the traffic law enacted in April 2025 that substantially increased penalties for running red lights to 150 Kuwaiti dinars along with potential arrests for serious breaches. Those changes have already shown positive effects on driver behavior across the country. The ministry continues to integrate technology to address ongoing safety challenges in a dense urban road network.
Major Engineer Mohammed Al-Ghanem of the Traffic Control Department highlighted the system’s role in protecting lives by minimizing sudden stops and starts at busy crossings. In statements to local outlets, he pointed to lower collision rates at pilot locations as evidence of its effectiveness. Al-Ghanem called on all motorists to adhere strictly to the instructions for the benefit of everyone sharing the roads.
The advisory arrives as authorities work to standardize practices similar to those in other GCC states where comparable warning systems have operated for years. Public feedback on social media has been largely supportive, with many expressing appreciation for the added warning time before signals change. Officials plan to complete installation at remaining intersections in the coming months.
Kuwait’s expatriate-heavy population stands to benefit from clearer traffic communications that reduce confusion for non-local drivers. The Sahel digital platform allows quick access to violation details and fine payments, supporting the enforcement drive. The ministry’s sustained focus on such measures reflects efforts to lower the overall accident rate through education and infrastructure upgrades.
