The Olympic Council of Asia announced in a statement that its president, HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, and Keith Joseph, president of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees, signed a cooperation agreement in Barcelona, Spain. The pact, concluded on August 7, 2026, runs from 2026 to 2032 with an option for extension by mutual consent. The OCA statement described the accord as a means to foster closer sporting ties between the two regions.

According to the OCA statement, the agreement calls for the exchange of expertise in organizing sports events, developing athletes and benefiting from sports management knowledge. The two bodies will also organize joint scientific seminars and conferences to promote shared learning. These provisions form the core of the six-year framework.

The OCA statement quoted Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani as saying this agreement will provide a platform for the exchange of information and knowledge which will contribute to the development of sport in both regions. The OCA president added that the partnership creates opportunities for broader cooperation. Joseph, who signed for CANOC, welcomed the accord as a step toward enhanced collaboration.

OCA figures place the number of its member national Olympic committees at 45 across Asia. CANOC data accounts for 32 national Olympic committees representing countries and territories in the Caribbean. The statement noted that the agreement connects these two distinct Olympic communities.

A similar cooperation pact between the OCA and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa was renewed in recent years, Qatar News Agency reports show. The latest agreement with CANOC fits within the OCA’s pattern of expanding partnerships beyond its traditional geographic scope. Officials indicated that implementation of initial joint programs will begin in 2027.

The statement added that the accord will support improved standards in event organization and athlete preparation across both sides. Joint seminars are set to address topics including training methodologies and sports administration best practices. The OCA said follow-up meetings will outline specific activities under the new pact.
