Al Ahly appointed Moroccan coach Hussein Amouta as its new head coach on a two-year deal this week, the club announced. Amouta arrives with extensive experience from Moroccan clubs and the Jordan national team.
The 53-year-old guided Jordan to the semi-finals of the 2023 Asian Cup, according to Asian Football Confederation records. He also secured the Moroccan Botola Pro title with Wydad Casablanca and competed deep into the CAF Champions League with the side. Al Ahly viewed these credentials as a strong fit for its demanding schedule of league and continental matches.
Club records show that Al Ahly has secured a record 12 CAF Champions League titles along with 45 Egyptian league championships according to Transfermarkt data. The club has maintained its position as Africa’s most successful side over decades of competition. Amouta’s appointment is designed to help the team reclaim continental supremacy after recent campaigns that fell short of expectations.
Reports from Egypt Today stated that more than 95 percent of contract terms were agreed prior to a final meeting in Cairo to complete the appointment. The deal includes a release clause capped at three months’ compensation. Amouta will be joined by a four-member coaching staff featuring an assistant coach, fitness specialist, goalkeeping coach and performance analyst.
The timing aligns with preparations for the upcoming Egyptian Premier League season and potential African assignments. Al Ahly officials have indicated that the two-year contract length should allow for long-term planning and squad development.
