Kuwait Air Defenses Neutralize 13 Hostile Drones in Single-Day Airspace Violation
Kuwaiti forces intercepted 13 of 14 hostile drones that breached the country’s airspace over a 24-hour period ending March 15, 2026, the Ministry of Defense said, with three soldiers sustaining minor injuries in the process. Air defenses destroyed eight while the National Guard handled five others, though three drones that targeted Kuwait International Airport damaged its radar system without causing casualties, according to Brigadier General Saud Al-Otaibi.
The ministry’s spokesman, Brigadier General Saud Al-Otaibi, said during a media briefing that falling debris from the destroyed drones had caused material damage in several locations. He confirmed that the three drones striking the airport affected only the radar installation and produced no human casualties there. The coordinated defense effort reflected the readiness of both air force and ground units to counter such incursions, Al-Otaibi noted in remarks reported by Arab Times.
According to the official account, National Guard personnel operating at assigned responsibility areas successfully engaged and eliminated the five additional hostile drones. This brought the confirmed interceptions to 13, although the ministry initially reported 14 detections, leaving the status of one device unclear from available details. The incident highlighted vulnerabilities in regional airspace amid ongoing tensions.
Kuwait has faced repeated drone and missile threats throughout 2026, as documented in subsequent ministry briefings. Kuwait Times reported that on March 21 air defenses intercepted nine ballistic missiles along with four drones in another 24-hour span without reported damage. These events occurred against a backdrop of heightened regional military activity.
In June, Forbes detailed Kuwait’s request for advanced counter-unmanned aerial systems from the United States in a transaction valued at 1.98 billion dollars. The systems, including Roadrunner-Munition and Anvil-Kinetic platforms from Anduril Industries, are intended to complement the country’s Patriot PAC-3 batteries against affordable drone swarms. A State Department release confirmed the approval of the sale to bolster layered defenses.
Reuters reported in late May that Kuwaiti forces continued to intercept hostile missile and drone threats, advising residents that any explosions heard stemmed from defensive operations. Similar announcements persisted into June, indicating the sustained nature of the challenges to national airspace.
