The Egyptian Football Association announced on Tuesday that it had extended the contract of national team coach Hossam Hassan until 2030. EFA president Hany Abu Rida stated that the board approved the renewal for both Hassan and his brother Ibrahim, who serves as team director, following the squad’s impressive display at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The federation indicated the decision was made to maintain continuity in the technical project after historic milestones were reached.

According to the EFA, the extension falls within the board’s efforts to ensure stability for the coaching staff and to continue progress based on the targets set for the national team. Hassan assumed the role in February 2024 and has since compiled a record of 20 wins, nine draws and six losses across 35 matches, Ahram Online reported. His appointment came after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign under the previous manager.

Egypt achieved their first World Cup finals victory under Hassan with a 3-1 win against New Zealand in the group stage, according to tournament records. The Pharaohs advanced beyond the group phase for the first time in their history and defeated Australia via penalties in the round of 32 before exiting to Argentina in a 3-2 thriller in the last 16, Reuters reported. The team had also finished fourth at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations during his tenure.

The initial approval for the contract renewal was given in July shortly after the World Cup, with final procedures completed upon the delegation’s return to Egypt. A meeting on Tuesday attended by Abu Rida, vice president Khaled El Darandali, secretary general Mustafa Azam and the Hassan brothers oversaw the signing of the new deals, the federation said. This step secures Hassan’s leadership through the next cycle of major international tournaments.

Hassan, a former prolific striker who made his Egypt debut in 1985 and helped qualify for the 1990 World Cup, has brought significant experience to the coaching position. The 60-year-old’s success in elevating the team’s performance has been cited by officials as a key factor in the decision to extend his stay. Data from the EFA highlights the improvement in results since he took over from Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria.

The extension ensures the same technical staff remains in place as Egypt prepares for the 2030 World Cup finals, which the contract extension is designed to cover. The 2026 tournament saw the Pharaohs reach the knockout rounds for the first time, Reuters reported. Egypt had previously featured at the World Cup in 1934, 1990 and 2018 without advancing past the group stage.
