Burgan Club said in a statement that Yaqoub Al-Mousawi would return as head coach for the 2026-27 campaign following his previous successful stint with the team. The appointment builds on the club’s recent triumph in the Asian Men’s Club League Handball Championship. Al-Mousawi’s return is expected to provide continuity as the squad prepares for its debut at the world club level.
The International Handball Federation reported that Burgan made history in June by winning the 2026 Asian title as debutants after dramatic back-to-back comebacks in the final against Saudi Arabia’s Khaleej Club. Burgan became the fourth Kuwaiti side to qualify for the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, joining Al-Salmiya, Al-Qadsiya and Al-Kuwait. Mohsen Mahmoud of Burgan finished as the competition’s top scorer with 61 goals according to IHF statistics.
According to the club announcement the team will hold an overseas training camp in early September to fine tune its preparations. The IHF Men’s Club World Championship is scheduled to take place in Cairo from September 25 to October 1. Technical and physical programs are currently being finalized by the coaching staff.
The club statement indicated that scouting for foreign players is underway to bolster the roster for the international competition. This recruitment drive aims to address specific areas identified in the recent Asian campaign. Officials have been evaluating talent needs across various positions.
Kuwait Times noted that Burgan Club President Anwar Al-Otaibi praised the organization of the Asian championship that his team ultimately won. The victory has elevated the profile of Kuwaiti club handball on the continental stage. Previous Kuwaiti participants in the world championship have included Al-Kuwait which competed in 2022 and 2023.
The announcement comes as the squad transitions from its Asian success into a more demanding global schedule. Al-Mousawi previously stepped in during the 2025 season replacing another coach. His experience is seen as vital for navigating the challenges of the world championship.
