The International Handball Federation reported that Burgan will compete in the Club World Championship for the first time after securing Asia’s berth through its June title win. The Kuwaiti side overcame Saudi Arabia’s Al-Khaleej 34-32 in extra time to claim the 28th Asian Men’s Club League Handball Championship hosted in Kuwait. That success followed a semifinal comeback victory over Qatar’s Al-Duhail and capped an impressive debut campaign on the continental stage.

A Kuwait Times assessment found that Burgan’s Asian triumph marked the club’s first continental crown and positioned it among a select group of Kuwaiti representatives at the world level. Previous Kuwaiti participants in the competition include Al-Salmiya in 2002, Al-Qadsiya in 2007 and Al-Kuwait in 2022 and 2023. The 2026 edition returns to Egypt, where the format features a group phase followed by knockout rounds among the continental qualifiers and host representatives.

Burgan players such as Kosuke Yasuhira and Mohsen Mahmoud delivered key performances throughout the Asian tournament, according to an IHF review of the event. Yasuhira contributed crucial goals in the closing stages of both the semifinal and final, while Mahmoud finished as one of the competition’s top scorers with 61 goals across all matches. The IHF noted that Burgan’s back-to-back comebacks in the knockout stage highlighted the squad’s resilience under pressure from more established regional sides.

Egypt will host the Club World Championship in September, the International Handball Federation confirmed in its tournament preview. The event brings together the strongest club teams from each confederation, with Burgan aiming to build on its Asian success against European, African and other continental champions. Organizers have emphasized the growing competitiveness of Asian clubs in recent editions of the Super Globe, formerly known by that name until 2023.

Kuwait Times figures show that the Asian championship drew strong local attendance and featured seven teams from across the continent in a round-robin preliminary phase before the knockout stage. Burgan advanced from the preliminary round despite a narrow 26-25 defeat to Al-Khaleej, ultimately finishing second in the group before the semifinal breakthrough. The competition also served as preparation for several sides ahead of international club campaigns.

Club officials have focused on maintaining momentum after the Asian victory, the International Handball Federation stated. Burgan’s rapid rise since entering continental competition has drawn attention within the handball community, with the team now tasked with adapting its style for the higher pace expected at the world championship. Additional warm-up matches are planned before the squad travels to Egypt.
