The Ministry of Interior’s General Traffic Department launched a smart traffic pre-alert system that provides advance warnings before traffic lights change at intersections, the department announced at the start of the month. This technology gives motorists and pedestrians additional seconds to prepare for shifts from red to green or green to red, according to rollout details shared with local outlets. A security source cited by the department stated the initiative forms part of the ministry’s efforts to improve road safety by using modern technology and smart traffic solutions.
The system features two distinct alerts that activate prior to any signal change. Red light alerts warn drivers to prepare to proceed safely once the light turns green while green light alerts prompt them to slow down gradually in anticipation of stopping. These pre-alerts, as described in the General Traffic Department’s materials, seek to reduce driver confusion and the abrupt maneuvers that often trigger rear-end collisions at equipped sites.
Implementation began with coverage at 40 intersections and will expand gradually to additional locations across all six governorates, the department reported. Sensors linked to traffic signals monitor cycles and trigger the warnings at appropriate distances to allow safe speed adjustments. The phased rollout enables authorities to assess performance before wider deployment, according to the initial briefing.
A study on road risks in Kuwait found that approximately 450 people die each year from traffic injuries although figures show a slightly decreasing trend in recent periods. The analysis published via PMC noted that non-Kuwaitis experience road traffic fatality counts four times higher than Kuwaiti nationals given their large share of the workforce. Government statistics indicated a 34 percent drop in accident deaths during the first half of 2025 compared with earlier corresponding periods.
Ministry of Interior data places sudden braking and signal-related violations among leading contributors to intersection accidents and associated injuries. The pre-alert system addresses these patterns by encouraging measured responses rather than last-second reactions, the General Traffic Department explained in its announcement. Officials have urged drivers to combine the new alerts with standard practices such as observing speed limits and maintaining safe following distances.
The deployment aligns with national plans to integrate artificial intelligence and smart solutions into traffic management across Kuwait. Traffic engineers will monitor initial results at the 40 sites to guide future expansions and any necessary adjustments. The General Traffic Department emphasized that the technology supplements existing regulations without replacing driver responsibility at all intersections.
