Kuwait Minister Dr. Reem Al-Fulaij discussed food security cooperation with Kazakh Ambassador Yerzhan Yelekeyev on June 25 as a pillar of sustainable development, the Kuwait News Agency reported. The meeting reviewed partnership opportunities in agriculture and supply chains to enhance food system sustainability in both countries.
The Kuwait News Agency statement quoted the minister as saying the two sides reviewed opportunities to develop a partnership and exchange expertise in ways that support food systems while enhancing their sustainability. Mechanisms for collaboration on agricultural production and food supply chains were also on the agenda to guarantee food stability and availability. A range of other mutually beneficial issues tied to food security were addressed during the session at the EPA headquarters.
Kuwait maintains solid food security indicators even as it depends heavily on imports for the bulk of its needs, a United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia review found. The minister’s portfolio encompasses the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources along with the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition, both of which were represented in related internal discussions. These entities help align diplomatic outreach with domestic programs that seek to diversify sources and improve local output.
Separately the minister instructed affiliated agencies to create an integrated national database that aids decision-making and promotes environmental transparency, according to a further Kuwait News Agency dispatch. The order followed a session with senior staff from the Environment Public Authority, the agriculture authority and the food and nutrition authority to begin a pilot phase of government sustainability reporting. The project aligns with Environmental, Social and Governance standards and will help develop indicators that improve Kuwait’s position in international rankings.
Al-Fulaij noted that the database will measure the real impact of environmental projects and initiatives. Such measurement is expected to raise the efficiency of natural resource use while lifting overall environmental quality inside the country. The participation of food and nutrition officials in the database meeting illustrates how sustainability reporting connects to national food security objectives.
Kuwait Vision 2035 sets out steps to expand local farming, introduce agritech and maintain strategic reserves, according to information published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A partnership between the World Food Programme and the Kuwait Fund for Development, announced in February 2025, aims to support similar goals worldwide, the two organisations stated in a joint release. These policies address the constraints of limited arable land that has long shaped the Gulf’s food strategies.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has activated oversight teams to monitor prices, availability and regulatory compliance in recent months, a ministry spokesperson told local media. Strategic stocks held at cooperative societies remain sufficient and supply lines continue without interruption, Ministry of Social Affairs Undersecretary Dr. Khaled Al-Ajmi said during a tour of the central control room. Such internal safeguards complement the external partnerships that Dr. Al-Fulaij is advancing to strengthen overall resilience.
