A statement from Japan’s Prime Minister’s Office indicated that Takaichi appreciated Kuwait’s message of sympathy following the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake while Sheikh Jarrah underlined the value of the strategic partnership in advancing cooperation across multiple domains. Japan has launched the POWERR Asia framework to strengthen energy security by supporting emergency oil procurement and stockpiling in Asia, an effort that relies heavily on partnership with producers such as Kuwait, the foreign ministry explained. The two sides also aligned on promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific vision that upholds international law and secure sea lanes critical for global trade.
High-level reciprocal visits have marked the relationship in recent years, with Kuwait’s Crown Prince travelling to Japan in May 2025 and Japan’s then-foreign minister visiting Kuwait four months later, Kuwaiti media outlets noted. These engagements have expanded the agenda beyond traditional energy cooperation into fields including artificial intelligence, education, culture and sports. Sheikh Jarrah’s trip marked the first solo visit to Japan by a Kuwaiti foreign minister since 2010, according to the Japanese ambassador to Kuwait.
Japan’s Ambassador to Kuwait Mukai Kenichiro highlighted the breadth of ties in a recent commentary, pointing to a ceremony held on August 24, 2026, at the Japanese residence to farewell Kuwaiti participants in the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and Para Games. The event included Kuwait’s Minister of State for Youth and Sports Affairs and leaders of the national Olympic and Paralympic committees. Such cultural and athletic links are expected to receive a further boost from the foreign minister’s engagements in Tokyo.
The ministers decided to accelerate joint work through resumed meetings of the Japan-Kuwait joint committee, foreign ministry policy consultations and security dialogues, the Japanese side stated. Both countries attach importance to shared principles such as respect for the rule of law and peaceful resolution of disputes via dialogue. Kuwait remains a vital energy partner for Japan, supplying stable volumes of oil that help anchor the Asian nation’s energy strategy amid global uncertainties.
