The National Bank of Kuwait warned customers this week against fake travel booking websites as the holiday season approaches, urging them to verify the legitimacy of online platforms before making any reservations or sharing financial details. The advisory aims to prevent clients from becoming victims of phishing and identity theft schemes that increase during high-demand vacation times. Bank officials noted that scammers frequently deploy fake sites that look identical to trusted brands.

The bank highlighted several red flags that should alert potential customers. These include offers with prices significantly below market rates and requests for immediate payment through unconventional methods such as wire transfers. Users were advised to avoid clicking on promotional links received via email or messaging apps. Instead they should navigate directly to the official websites of airlines and hotels.

Practical recommendations formed a core part of the National Bank of Kuwait’s guidance. Customers should confirm the presence of security certificates indicated by the padlock symbol and https prefix. The bank suggested using credit cards with strong consumer protections for online purchases rather than debit options. Enabling transaction alerts was listed as an additional safeguard against unauthorized activity.

Official data underscores the prevalence of such threats in Kuwait. The Ministry of Interior’s Electronic and Cyber Crime Combating Department blocked 392 fake websites involved in fraud and deception during a 2024 operation. Many of those sites targeted consumers with deceptive offers across multiple sectors including travel. The bank positioned its warning as part of broader public awareness initiatives.

Similar alerts have come from the National Cybersecurity Center which cautioned against fake travel deals that exploit seasonal demand. The center recommended confirming all reservations through licensed agencies and verified links. Kuwaiti institutions have coordinated on multiple public advisories in response to the trend.

Individuals suspecting they have engaged with a fraudulent site should reach out to the National Bank of Kuwait without delay to report the incident and monitor their accounts. The bank has procedures for investigating unauthorized transactions linked to such scams. Reporting details to the cyber crime unit at the Ministry of Interior can aid enforcement actions.
