Egypt coach Hossam Hassan accused match officials of bias and external pressure after his side fell to a 3-2 defeat against Argentina in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match in Atlanta saw Egypt race into a 2-0 lead before Argentina mounted a comeback with three goals in 13 minutes, culminating in Enzo Fernandez’s 92nd-minute winner. According to The Athletic, Hassan described the outcome as an injustice and suggested officials faced pressure to keep the defending champions in the tournament. Sky Sports reported that the French referee Francois Letexier faced sharp criticism from the Egyptian bench throughout the encounter.

The Athletic detailed how Egypt had a goal disallowed by VAR for a foul in the build-up involving contact on Lisandro Martinez. Reports from ESPN noted that Egypt were denied a potential penalty when Julian Alvarez caught Mohamed Salah’s foot with no intervention from video assistant referee. In addition, no review took place after Alexis Mac Allister pulled Hamdi Fathy’s shirt in the move leading to Argentina’s decisive goal. The Independent stated that Hassan had previously objected to Letexier officiating the fixture citing the referee’s background.

Hassan told beIN Sports that his team had not witnessed respect or fair play during the contest. “We haven’t seen respect or fair play,” Hassan said according to ESPN. “A penalty was ruled out and a second that should have been checked for a penalty for us was not even checked by the VAR and our second goal was remarkably for whatever reason disallowed.” He added that life and the world are unfair but questioned the absence of fairness in sports while declaring the cup directed towards Argentina. The coach further claimed external factors beyond technical elements influenced proceedings.

Forward Mostafa Ziko echoed his manager’s sentiments in comments to Canadian broadcaster TSN. “It was not fair from the referee,” Ziko said. “It was really not fair that he wasted all of our efforts with his decisions.” Ziko concluded by repeating that the cup is directed towards Argentina. Multiple outlets including Yahoo Sports reported that FIFA had been approached for comment on the accusations but had yet to respond as of July 8.

Argentina progressed to the quarterfinals as defending champions after winning the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The 2026 edition marks the first 48-team World Cup hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico according to FIFA records. Egypt had advanced from the group stage and mounted a competitive display before the late collapse that ended their campaign in the last 16. Al Jazeera noted that Hassan had used a pre-match news conference to highlight the situation in Palestine which some observers linked to potential referee bias though no official confirmation exists.

Hassan received a yellow card during the match for his protests over the lack of VAR checks on key incidents. The refereeing debate has drawn comparisons to past controversies at major tournaments where video technology altered outcomes in tight fixtures. ESPN reported that the Egyptian federation may consider formal complaints to FIFA although no such step had been confirmed by July 8. The result leaves Argentina on course to defend their title while Egypt returned home citing officiating as the decisive factor.
