Kuwait Airways will resume three weekly flights to Sphinx International Airport in Cairo from its Terminal 4 at Kuwait International Airport beginning May 10, 2026, to enhance operational flexibility and cater to rising travel demand, according to Acting CEO Abdulwahab Al-Shatti. The airline maintains two daily flights to Cairo International Airport and two weekly flights to Sohag Airport as it seeks to provide more options for passengers traveling to Egypt.
Al-Shatti said the schedules are planned with continuity, safety and quality in mind, noting that operating from Terminal 4 will improve efficiency and passenger services. The carrier will monitor demand and stands ready to add special flights or increase capacity on routes with high bookings, he added. Sphinx International Airport features an annual capacity of 1.2 million passengers and can handle 900 passengers per hour following recent terminal expansions, according to airport management.
This development occurs against a backdrop of strong growth in Egypt’s aviation sector. According to an IATA report, Egypt had 17.2 million international passenger departures in 2023, with nearly half heading to the Middle East including routes to Kuwait. Air passenger traffic in Egypt increased 44.6 percent that year to 35.142 billion passenger-kilometres, national data showed.
Passenger volumes at Egyptian airports rose to 4.6 million in January and February 2026, a 15 percent increase from the prior year, the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority reported. The Sphinx airport’s location near major tourist sites like the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum positions it to benefit from this uptick in visitors. Kuwait Airways first launched flights to the airport in January 2026, with the May schedule representing a resumption of services, industry sources indicated.
The use of Terminal 4 for the Sphinx flights is part of the airline’s broader approach to optimise its operations at Kuwait International Airport. This allows for dedicated handling of the Egypt routes alongside its other international services. Demand monitoring will help ensure the flights align with actual traveler needs throughout the season.
Expansion at Sphinx International Airport is expected to continue, with plans to reach five million passengers per year in the future as tourism recovers and grows, local authorities have stated. The current upgrades have already contributed to a 21 percent rise in passenger numbers at the facility in a recent reported period. These improvements support the addition of new international routes by carriers such as Kuwait Airways.
