The General Traffic Department announced the full closure of the Third Ring Road flyover above the bridge at its intersection with Damascus Road in both directions beginning Friday evening. The department stated that the measure would remain in place until maintenance work is completed on August 28, 2026. According to the department the affected stretch runs from the intersection with King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Road, also known as Morocco Road, to the intersection with King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Road, also known as Riyadh Road.
The General Traffic Department clarified that the intersection and roundabouts at Damascus Road and the Third Ring Road would stay fully operational during the maintenance period. The department urged motorists to plan trips in advance and select alternative routes to reduce potential delays. Department officials emphasized the need for drivers to stay informed of the changes through official channels.
Central Statistical Bureau figures show that the total number of cars and motorcycles operating in Kuwait reached 2.609 million by the end of 2024. This vehicle count reflects an increase of 86,388 units from the prior year and underscores the heavy daily load on major arteries such as the ring roads. A research assessment of roadway traffic in Kuwait noted that ring-road corridors carry substantial volumes that require regular upkeep to support urban mobility.
The Public Authority for Roads and Land Transport oversaw the signing of 18 contracts worth KD 400 million for nationwide road repairs in October 2024. Those agreements cover both internal roads in the six governorates and motorways, with provisions for a 10-year warranty on the foundation layer. The authority indicated that the work includes replacement of damaged asphalt, treatment of base layers, and upgrades to shoulders, markings and traffic signs.
Kuwait’s road maintenance initiatives have expanded in recent years to address wear on the network. The General Traffic Department has issued comparable temporary closures on other ring roads and expressways as part of coordinated campaigns.
