The General Traffic Department under the Ministry of Interior activated an electronic link with systems operated by car rental offices and companies across the country. This connection permits real-time review of customer traffic violation records before any contract can be completed. Rental providers will withhold vehicle delivery from those with outstanding fines until full payment removes the block from the individual’s file. The move is designed to improve recovery of unpaid penalties and stop them from piling up further.
According to figures from the General Traffic Department, unpaid traffic violations exceeded 1.7 million in 2023 with a value surpassing KD 44 million. The total value of such accumulated fines from 2020 onward had reached a quarter billion Kuwaiti dinars by that point. A traffic campaign in Al-Ardhiya on August 19 resulted in 59 traffic violations recorded against rental offices along with 64 regulatory reports, the General Traffic Department told Times Kuwait. The operation also saw two wanted persons arrested and two vehicles seized for judicial reasons. The new digital measure builds directly on these intensified inspection efforts targeting the rental industry.
An informed source described the electronic integration as a significant addition to Kuwait’s digital fine collection mechanisms. It enables quicker record checks and simplifies the payment process for affected customers. The linkage further advances coordination between state databases and private firms offering vehicle services. Individuals with blocks on their records must clear all due fines using approved methods such as the ministry website or Sahel application. Payment confirmation automatically lifts the restriction allowing the rental agreement to move forward without delay. The source noted that the requirement applies to all car rental businesses connected to the system. No exceptions are available for handing over vehicles while violations remain pending.
The implementation follows recent department warnings that repeating violations like obstructing traffic or improper overtaking could lead to court action. Settlement fees stand at KD 20 for traffic obstruction and KD 15 for overtaking breaches according to the General Traffic Department. Vehicles risk impoundment for periods up to two months in line with traffic law provisions. These combined tools form part of a wider effort to promote safer driving standards throughout Kuwait.
