The Kuwait Traffic Department issued towing safety reminders to motorists Friday, limiting speeds to 80 km per hour, mandating right-lane travel and requiring functional lights along with reflective safety equipment. The department prohibited towing multiple marine vessels and said violators face 60-day impoundment of their vehicles and trailers under Article 207, according to Arab Times.

According to Arab Times, the Traffic Department has reiterated these towing requirements as part of its ongoing efforts to improve road safety. Vehicles towing marine vessels or trailers must adhere to the 80 km/h speed limit while keeping to the far right lane to minimize disruption to faster traffic. All towing setups are required to feature reflective tape, approved safety equipment and fully operational lights, the department said. Drivers were also instructed to verify that all lighting on both the towing vehicle and the trailer operates correctly at all times.

The department specifically warned against towing more than one marine vessel simultaneously behind a single vehicle. Such violations, along with other breaches of towing protocols, will lead to the impoundment of both the towing vehicle and the attached trailer or vessel for a period of 60 days. This measure is applied under Article 207 of the Executive Regulations governing traffic, Arab Times reported on Friday. The warning serves to highlight the legal consequences drivers may face if they disregard the established guidelines.

Arab Times reported in May that the General Traffic Department had launched a dedicated campaign targeting unsafe trailer and towing violations across major roads. That effort focused on Ministerial Resolution No. 4391 of 2015, which sets standards for safety equipment, load securing, lighting and trailer dimensions. The campaign also enforced prohibitions on carrying passengers inside trailers during towing operations. Authorities indicated at the time that inspections would continue in all regions to improve overall compliance.

Interior Ministry data released in June 2026 showed that traffic violations have declined markedly since the enforcement of a new traffic law. Speed limit infractions fell by 65 percent in the period from April 2025 to April 2026 compared with the prior year, dropping from 1,618,739 to 561,820 cases, the ministry figures show. Red light violations similarly decreased by 63 percent, from 140,539 to 51,732 over the same timeframe.

The current reminders build upon regulations first outlined in 2015 when the traffic department introduced stricter measures for vehicles towing trailers, according to earlier reports from Kuwait Times. At that time, officials called for full adherence to prevent hazards associated with oversized or improperly secured loads on public highways. The focus on marine vessel towing reflects the popularity of boating activities in Kuwait particularly during the summer months.

A statistical analytical study published in 2016 examined traffic accidents and violations in Kuwait and their social and economic impacts on society. Public awareness campaigns have formed a key component of the ministry’s strategy to address such incidents over the past decade. By issuing these periodic warnings the Traffic Department reinforces existing laws, according to ministry statements. Data from regulatory bodies continue to track the effectiveness of such educational approaches alongside direct enforcement.
