Kuwait’s Ministry of Health announced an expansion of its voluntary shingles vaccination program that now includes all adults aged 50 years and older together with adults aged 18 and above who have weakened or suppressed immune systems. The ministry issued the update through its Public Health Department’s Infectious Diseases Control Section on July 2 to protect higher-risk populations from the painful condition. Officials emphasized that the move broadens eligibility while maintaining the program’s optional status for those who qualify.

The ministry’s statement reported that vaccination sites have been increased to 40 preventive health clinics within primary healthcare centers in addition to preventive clinics at main hospitals. Eligible individuals can obtain the vaccine by visiting the nearest such facility or by consulting a physician to confirm suitability under the new criteria. This distribution network aims to reduce barriers for residents seeking protection against the virus reactivation.

Shingles develops from reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox according to details provided in the ministry announcement. Risk rises with advancing age and among those with compromised immune function the ministry noted adding that the condition often produces a severe rash accompanied by intense pain. Long-term effects can include postherpetic neuralgia a persistent nerve pain that lasts months or years and impairs daily life for many patients.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention figures show the recombinant zoster vaccine known as Shingrix is 97 percent effective at preventing shingles in adults aged 50 to 69 with healthy immune systems. The same CDC assessment found 91 percent effectiveness among those aged 70 and older while overall protection against postherpetic neuralgia reaches 91 percent in adults 50 and older. For individuals with weakened immune systems effectiveness varies between 68 and 91 percent depending on the specific condition involved.

A Kaiser Permanente-led study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine determined that two doses of the vaccine delivered 76 percent effectiveness against shingles over a four-year follow-up period with limited waning. One dose alone provided 64 percent protection in the same analysis which tracked nearly two million patients across multiple health systems. These outcomes reinforce the value of completing the recommended two-dose schedule for sustained immunity.

The ministry advised residents to seek guidance at authorized clinics where staff can verify eligibility and administer the vaccine under the updated guidelines. This step follows earlier program elements that targeted narrower groups before the July expansion took effect. Health authorities continue to monitor uptake as the broader criteria reach more segments of the population.
