Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is set to perform maintenance on May 24, 2026, that will lower water flow at five northern filling stations for 12 hours starting at 8 p.m. The work along Al-Abdali Road will affect Al-Mutlaa, Al-Rawdatain, Al-Qushaaniya, Al-Abdali Al-Balad and Umm Niqa, with the ministry advising residents to store water and call 152 if disruptions occur.
According to the ministry’s announcement, the maintenance is expected to conclude by 8 a.m. the next day, restoring normal operations to the water filling stations that supply local communities. These stations are vital in the northern part of the country, where water resources are managed centrally due to the arid climate. A report in Frontiers in Environmental Science described Kuwait as facing severe water challenges because of its location and lack of surface water resources, with groundwater in northern areas being largely brackish.
The ministry’s data from 2020 placed average daily fresh water consumption at 457.6 million gallons, with an installed capacity of 683.3 million gallons, figures that illustrate the extensive system requiring regular maintenance to avoid larger disruptions. Such scheduled works allow for network improvements without halting supply entirely. The choice of an overnight period on a Sunday is intended to coincide with lower demand times across the affected regions.
Arab Times reported that the ministry has urged all residents in the listed areas to take the necessary precautions in advance of the maintenance window. This includes filling private tanks and coordinating with households that may have higher needs during the period. The authority also expressed thanks to customers for their understanding while the work is underway.
In addition to the primary grid, northern Kuwait has access to limited groundwater resources. The environmental science study noted that total groundwater output stands at around 0.55 million cubic meters per day across the country, with a portion blended for potable use. Desalination plants supply the majority of fresh water distributed through the national network that includes the Al-Abdali Road corridor.
The ministry is responsible for providing electricity and water services to more than three million consumers, according to official records. Its annual statistics outline consumption patterns that guide the timing of infrastructure work throughout Kuwait’s governorates. Advance notification of the specific stations helps communities in the north prepare for the temporary reduction in flow.
